How does the antioxidant power of blueberry help my skin look better?

Since July is National Blueberry Month, how could I not highlight the amazing benefits of this small-but-mighty superfood?

Blueberries are most notably recognized because of their deep blue pigment and this color is not just for visual aesthetics. This deep royal blue is indicative of the potent antioxidant profile that helps fight collagen destruction in our skin and preserve our “youthful glow”. The presence of Collagen, a protein, is what makes the skin appear young, supple, and plump. Who doesn’t want more of that?

Recently, USDA scientists have conducted studies to determine the antioxidant concentration and antioxidant capacity per serving size in over 100 whole foods. They found that blueberries ranked among the top 20 most concentrated sources of antioxidants, even higher than cranberries and blackberries!

So what makes blueberries so special? The answer is simple; blueberries contain vital “phytochemicals”, antioxidants, in the forms of anthocyanins and resveratrol.

Anthocyanins are natural pigments that give certain whole foods their deep crimson or royal blue hue. Resveratrol is a potent phytochemical originally found in red grapes (and red wine!) and more recently, in blueberries. When these powerful antioxidants are applied topically, they can actually help slow the mechanisms that cause fine lines and wrinkles!

With these fun facts, you can impress your friends at your next dinner party with your knowledge that blueberries are not only a superfood for your body, but also a superfood for your skin!

I have been asked if I receive any financial incentive to mention products in my newsletter/blog and the answer is no. I only comment on products that I have used myself or that I recommend to patients because they have unique benefits. However, I do occasionally sit on some advisory panels for pharmaceutical companies and I am co-founder of Airelle Skin.

Confidence Beyond the Skin-Highlight on Acai

Acai-Powerhouse antioxidant for health and beauty!

It is true that I have taken a bit of a hiatus from blog writing, but I am officially back! For those who don’t know, my hiatus was a far cry restful, it has been an exciting journey of ups and downs, highs and lows; an adventure that only another start up entrepreneur would truly understand. But, like most entrepreneurs, I would not trade this experience and amazing journey for anything in the world!

My time over the past 2 years has been spent heavily researching the benefits of antioxidants from the inside out, and outside in, and in particular how antioxidants benefit the skin! Mother Nature has been kind enough to produce so many power packed anti-oxidants to help us stay healthy, youthful, and vibrant.  While my heart will always be with the blueberry as an antioxidant powerhouse, there are a few other antioxidants that are noteworthy and worth knowing about.

Acai is an antioxidant that is well known as a powerful antioxidant food source, but did you know it has skin care benefits as well?

Acai has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer benefits. It also has the ability to slow, or even reverse signs of aging that are related to oxidative processes!

It also has a variety of omega fatty acids. Fatty acids keep skin cells moist and strong, helping to fight off wrinkles and dry, dull skin.  This means that Acai in skin care can help skin appear more youthful and supple!  Acai is a good source of a variety of vitamins too, like Vitamin B, C, and E!  smiling face

One of the coolest things about Acai when thinking about it in skin care is that when the oil is processed and stored long-term, the antioxidant levels remain high as opposed to other antioxidants that slowly loose antioxidant power over time. I love this fun fact about acai in anti-aging skin care!

Are you taking advantage of all Mother Nature’s little gifts? Don’t forget your anti-oxidants; inside and out!

Confidence Beyond the Skin-Men’s Health

Squamous cellMelanomaC

Did you know that we are wrapping up National Men’s Health week? This week is a time when preventable disease and good health measures are brought to the attention of men around the country.

Did you know that Melanoma can be a deadly cancer but it can be 100% curable if caught early? Melanoma is diagnosed in stages and if it is caught in the early stages, it can be cured by a simple out patient surgery. Encourage the men in your life to look for dark or irregular moles and get examined by a dermatologist at least once a year.

Did you know that sun induced skin cancers like Basal Cell carcinoma and Squamous Cell carcinoma can destroy your skin and cause disfigurement? Did you know that there are easy ways to treat these skin cancers when diagnosed early? Some of them can even be treated with a prescription topical cream in just a few weeks! Look for red and crusty lesions and point them out to your dermatologist as soon as you see them!

Did you know that more men than ever are trying to stay looking as young as they feel? Men are one of the fastest growing groups to inquire about cosmetic procedures! The most popular cosmetic procedures for men are Botox, for forehead wrinkles, and Photofacial laser, for broken facial capillaries and brown spots. Both of these procedures only take 15-20 minutes, have minimal discomfort and can help turn back the clock for the fellas.

Some men avoid the doctor at all costs so it is important to help out the men in your life and educate them about the dangers of skin cancer. Encourage sunscreen use of 30 SPF or higher and help remind the men in your life to look at their skin regularly for brown or red spots especially if they are new or changing. Let’s keep our dad’s and husbands healthy and looking good!

Confidence Beyond the Skin – Holiday Makeovers

This is a special holiday edition of my newsletter/blog! As you know, my goal is to write an article around the first of every month highlighting a new topic. I made an exception for this edition and I am writing 2 articles this month! This time of year, I am frequently asked about the benefits of minor cosmetic procedures because people want to look their best for their upcoming holiday parties. Whether you have a small office party, a large family reunion, or a fundraising galla to attend, everyone wants to look their best for the season!

Some cosmetic procedures require a series of treatments, or a significant amount of recovery time. Since we are only a few weeks away from the holidays, I will highlight a few procedures that have very little recovery.

Wrinkles and lines on the upper face and forehead area can be treated easily with either Botox or Dysport injections. These agents work by relaxing the muscles under the skin that pull to create lines. It is not particularly painful to receive these types of injections because they are administered with a tiny needle. They can cause temporary bruising. It takes about one week before you will look rested and refreshed, so if you want to minimize frown lines for the holidays, act soon!

Laugh and smile lines that shadow around the mouth can be treated very easily using Hyaluronic acid injectable agents like Juvederm and Restylane. These do not require skin testing ahead of time and show immediate results! Be careful! These injectable agents can cause bruising; so , just in case give yourself a week before the big party just in case!

To help avoid the bruising after an injectable procedures, check with your medical provider to make sure it is safe to minimize your intake of anti-inflammatory medications (i.e. Motrin, Aspirin, etc), fish oil, Vitamin E, and wine.  These types of medications will thin your blood slightly and increase the risk of bruising.

Microdermabrasion is a gentle procedure that  exfoliates the skin and minimizes the  appearance of fine lines and pores. This painless procedure will help the skin look and feel great without any down time or risk of bruising!

For that extra pampering, you can make a spa appointment to help you feel truly relaxed and refreshed! Some facials will hydrate your skin and make it appear smoother and more supple. Make sure you go to a reputable aesthetician especially if you have acne prone skin. Facials can flare up acne when they are too aggressive. If you are in L.A., Lauri at Solas in Santa Monica is great!

For a quick, at-home fix, try one of the new exfoliation brush systems such as Clarisonic or Olay. After you  exfoliate the dead skin, you can apply a little sunless tanner or bronzer. This will help minimize that pasty pallor some of us get this time of year.. A few drops of sunless tanner will go a long way to give you that “I just returned from Hawaii and am totally relaxed look”. Don’t forget to shape the arch of your eyebrows and put light shadow just under the brow. This will reflect light and draw attention to your eyes!

If you live in LA or have watched any reality TV lately, you have seen some scary outcomes from cosmetic procedures. We have all seen the frozen faced newscaster or the soap opera star showing off her new duck lips! This is surely not the look you want. It is important to start slow and ease into any procedure to ensure you get the result you are looking for.. You want to ensure that you will look naturally refreshed and not artificial!

I have been asked if I receive any financial incentive to mention products in my newsletter/blog and the answer is no. I only comment on products that I have used myself or that I recommend to patients because they have unique benefits.  However, I am a clinical trainer for both Medicis (Dysport/Restylane) and Allergan (Botox/Juvederm).
