Confidence Beyond the Skin-Highlight on Acai

Acai-Powerhouse antioxidant for health and beauty!

It is true that I have taken a bit of a hiatus from blog writing, but I am officially back! For those who don’t know, my hiatus was a far cry restful, it has been an exciting journey of ups and downs, highs and lows; an adventure that only another start up entrepreneur would truly understand. But, like most entrepreneurs, I would not trade this experience and amazing journey for anything in the world!

My time over the past 2 years has been spent heavily researching the benefits of antioxidants from the inside out, and outside in, and in particular how antioxidants benefit the skin! Mother Nature has been kind enough to produce so many power packed anti-oxidants to help us stay healthy, youthful, and vibrant.  While my heart will always be with the blueberry as an antioxidant powerhouse, there are a few other antioxidants that are noteworthy and worth knowing about.

Acai is an antioxidant that is well known as a powerful antioxidant food source, but did you know it has skin care benefits as well?

Acai has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer benefits. It also has the ability to slow, or even reverse signs of aging that are related to oxidative processes!

It also has a variety of omega fatty acids. Fatty acids keep skin cells moist and strong, helping to fight off wrinkles and dry, dull skin.  This means that Acai in skin care can help skin appear more youthful and supple!  Acai is a good source of a variety of vitamins too, like Vitamin B, C, and E!  smiling face

One of the coolest things about Acai when thinking about it in skin care is that when the oil is processed and stored long-term, the antioxidant levels remain high as opposed to other antioxidants that slowly loose antioxidant power over time. I love this fun fact about acai in anti-aging skin care!

Are you taking advantage of all Mother Nature’s little gifts? Don’t forget your anti-oxidants; inside and out!

Confidence Beyond the Skin-Men’s Health

Squamous cellMelanomaC

Did you know that we are wrapping up National Men’s Health week? This week is a time when preventable disease and good health measures are brought to the attention of men around the country.

Did you know that Melanoma can be a deadly cancer but it can be 100% curable if caught early? Melanoma is diagnosed in stages and if it is caught in the early stages, it can be cured by a simple out patient surgery. Encourage the men in your life to look for dark or irregular moles and get examined by a dermatologist at least once a year.

Did you know that sun induced skin cancers like Basal Cell carcinoma and Squamous Cell carcinoma can destroy your skin and cause disfigurement? Did you know that there are easy ways to treat these skin cancers when diagnosed early? Some of them can even be treated with a prescription topical cream in just a few weeks! Look for red and crusty lesions and point them out to your dermatologist as soon as you see them!

Did you know that more men than ever are trying to stay looking as young as they feel? Men are one of the fastest growing groups to inquire about cosmetic procedures! The most popular cosmetic procedures for men are Botox, for forehead wrinkles, and Photofacial laser, for broken facial capillaries and brown spots. Both of these procedures only take 15-20 minutes, have minimal discomfort and can help turn back the clock for the fellas.

Some men avoid the doctor at all costs so it is important to help out the men in your life and educate them about the dangers of skin cancer. Encourage sunscreen use of 30 SPF or higher and help remind the men in your life to look at their skin regularly for brown or red spots especially if they are new or changing. Let’s keep our dad’s and husbands healthy and looking good!

I am always looking for new blog topics or interesting products. Send your ideas to kasey.drapeaudamato@gmail.com.

I have been asked if I receive any financial incentive to mention products in my newsletter/blog and the answer is no. I only comment on products that I have used myself or that I recommend to patients because they have unique benefits. However, I am a clinical trainer for both Medicis (Dysport/Restylane) and Allergan (Botox/Juvederm).

Confidence Beyond the Skin-Are you Getting Enough Vitamin D this Summer?

This is a controversial topic these days. Many people, including myself,  are finding out that they are vitamin D deficient. Because of the increased attention to vitamin D  deficiency, Vitamin D supplement sales have increased 82% from 2008-2009.

Vitamin D can help strengthen and protect your bones, prevent diabetes, autoimmune disorders, depression, heart disease and some types of cancers. The Institute of Medicine is recommending a level of 20 ng/ml in your blood which can be achieved by a daily intake of 600 IU daily. The FDA recommends 400 IU daily. If you are deficient, your physician may recommend additional dietary supplements of 1000-2000 IU/day. Make sure to have your doctor monitor your levels because too much Vit D can also lead to health problems.

Many people ask me if they should get their vitamin D by exposing themselves to sunlight. It is true that short exposures of sunlight can convert to Vitamin D in your body, but I do not recommend getting Vitamin D from sun exposure because of the risk of skin cancer.

The Skin Cancer Foundation advises that you get your Vitamin D from oily fish, fortified dairy products, cereals, and supplements.

So, this 4th of July continue with your normal sun precautions to protect your skin and get your vitamin D by throwing a nice piece of salmon on the grill with a side of portabella or shiitake mushrooms. Yum!

I am  looking forward to small town parades and a lot of lobster this week while I  visit my family in Maine for the holiday!  I hope you have a happy and safe 4th of July!
