Confidence Beyond the Skin-Quick ways to Look your Best for a Summer Wedding or Reunion!

Spring is here and wedding season is upon us! So many patients, family and friends have been asking me what they can do to look their best for an upcoming event. Brides, Mother of the Brides and Grooms, and even fathers of the wedding couple, are always looking for the quick magic treatment to allow their skin to look flawless on the big day.

My good friends Stacey and Robert both looked fantastic on their big day a few weeks ago!

Here are my tips if you have an upcoming event and you want a little pick me up before the big day:

Dull or Rough Skin-

Professional Services: Microdermabrasion is fantastic for all skin types. It deep cleans the pores and removes dead skin off your skin’s surface, allowing your makeup artist to apply foundation on a smooth canvas. I would recommend 2-3 treatments done a few weeks apart, with the last treatment about one week before the big event. These treatments cost range between $120-200 depending if you have a spa or professional medical office perform the procedure.

At home: There are some great at home Microdermabrasion kits available. Try Olay Regenerist Microdermrasion kit ($25). But be careful with at-home Microdermabrasion or scrub treatments. They should not be performed more than once a week. More often application can lead to skin irritation or breakouts.

Splotchy or Sun Damaged Skin

Professional: Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacial is a non-invasive, light sourced professional treatment that will help remove brown spots and red, broken blood vessels. It significantly improves the appearance of sun damaged skin on face, chest and hands. If you have blotchy skin, start your photo facials well before your event because it will require 3-5 treatments to achieve the desired results. The treatments are spaced about 3 weeks apart, with little to no down time after each facial. The results are smooth, even skin tone with a brighter appearance. The cost is $350-500 for a treatment on the face. Individual brown spots can also be treated with a light spray of liquid nitrogen in the office.

At home: Try an at home bleaching cream to help lighten brown spots. I like Glytone Sun Vanish because it has a sunscreen mixed in with the skin lightening agent. Approx $65 at physician offices.

Forehead Lines or “Tired” Eyes

Professional: Botox is great to help soften forehead lines. The last thing you want is to look angry or to be squinting during your professional photos. Botox can help relax the muscles under the skin to soften the forehead lines. It is a simple procedure and very safe. It takes one week to appreciate the full benefit of Botox, and you can get a small bruise after Botox treatments, so schedule this treatment about 3-4 weeks before your event. Cost is usually $400-500 to treat the forehead lines depending on how much Botox is required to relax your muscles.

At home treatments: Look for products that contain Hyaluronic Acid to apply to crow’s feet and fine lines. Hyaluronic acid holds onto water and helps “plump” fine lines. Try La Roche Posay Redermic Anti-Wrinkle Firming Fill in Cream. ($40)

Laugh Lines or Lines Around the Mouth

Professional: Fillers like Restylane and Juvederm are awesome at eliminating the shadows around the laugh lines. Hopefully you will be smiling a lot at your party, and fillers can take years off your expression. Fillers are one of my favorite procedures to perform in the office because the results are visible instantly! Because these treatments require a series of injections, be sure to avoid blood thinning supplements (Aspirin, Anti-inflammatories, Vit E, and fish oil) if possible to help minimize bruising. These procedures are best performed 3-4 weeks before the big day and generally cost $650 for 1 syringe. Allergan, the makers of Botox and Juvederm, are offering $100 discount on combined procedures for the next couple of months. Take advantage if you are considering these types of treatments!

At home: Distract from your laugh lines by plumping up your lips with Avon Plumping Lip Color with SPF 15, or Clinique Full Potential lip shine! ($8 and $17 respectively)

If you want a sun kissed glow, before the event,  remember to follow my tips about sunless tanning creams. It is best to apply 48 hours before the event.

The most important thing is that you feel great on your big day! Stay hydrated, get a lot of rest, and savor every minute with your family, friends and loved ones on your special day.

I am always looking for new blog topics or interesting products. Send your ideas to kasey.drapeaudamato@gmail.com.

I have been asked if I receive any financial incentive to mention products in my newsletter/blog and the answer is no. I only comment on products that I have used myself or that I recommend to patients because they have unique benefits. However, I am a clinical trainer for both Medicis (Dysport/Restylane) and Allergan (Botox/Juvederm).

Confidence Beyond the Skin-What Products are the Best as Your Skin Matures?

Did you ever look at yourself in the mirror and see your mother? I frequently hear people say that their facial lines or texture of their hands reminds them of their mother. As people age they can see their skin reflect the genetic traits of generations past.

In honor of Mother’s day, I wanted to highlight some of the favorite products from three generations of women in my family. Here is a photo of my grandmother, my mother and me from last summer.

In my mid thirties, I am active and spend a lot of time outdoors when I am not working. I like a light sunscreen like Neutrogena liquid or Anthelios. For beauty, my favorites are Latisse Lash Extender and Neutrogena lip gloss with spf 15.

My mother wears contacts lenses and has very sensitive eyes. Many over the counter and department store facial lotions and cream products cause her eyes to burn and water. About a year ago, she discovered Revision moisturizer, which is a  moisturizer with spf 50. My mother is still acne prone, and Revision’s moisterizer is great for shine and does not cause breakouts. This product is only sold in professional physician offices. She has found that Clinque makeup works best for her sensitive skin and eyes.

At 87 years old, my grandmother always looks fabulous. From her hair to her skin, she looks like she is ready for the red carpet every day of the week! For over 20 years, she has maintained perfect shape to her hair using Adorn hair spray. It never fails her even in rain and wind! Relocating for years between the beach in Maine in the summer, and Florida in the winter, she has had a lot of sun exposure over her lifetime. Her skin has thinned and she bruises very easily, especially on her legs. She has discovered Dermablend body make up, the same product professional Hollywood makeup artists use to cover up unwanted marks. It works very well, but it is a heavy cover up, so use it with caution on your face if you are acne prone.

Monitor your skin needs regularly, or occasionally have a reliable skin care professional or aesthetician evaluate your skin. It might be time for you to modify your products!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there!
